CBS and Fox: If these guys don't keep the irony standards high, who will?
The virtuous executives at CBS recently faced a difficult decision. The Trojan Condom company had submitted its newest ad. The ad is creative, and funny, both good things, but the ad also suggests condoms should be used. As you would imagine, this presented the execs with a problem. Over a CBS conference room table, an exec no doubt put forth this likely scenario: Viewer at home watching As the World Turns, the episode where Dusty is helping Emily, a former prostitute, deal with the fact that her little sister Alison is a meth addict and porn star and then, wham, out of nowhere, cute condom ad. What is the viewer to think? The execs at CBS have the finger on the pulse and know that viewers truly care about how, on The Young and The Restless, Nick left Sharon when Phyllis, his mistress, was pregnant. You see, Nick and Phyllis married, but Nick was presumed dead in a plane crash. Sharon found comfort in the arms of Brad, who was married to Victoria, Nick's sister. Sharon is now married to Jack, who was once married to Phyllis, but things are rocky now that the truth about Brad and Sharon's tryst is out. Brad and Victoria are divorcing and Victoria has found comfort in J.T.'s arms. Now, the only question is, whose baby is it? Pregnancy prevention is the farthest thing from viewers' minds.
The CBS execs really had no other choice available to them, explaining, "while we understand and appreciate the humor of this creative, we do not find it appropriate for our network even with late-night-only restrictions."
Fox faced the same dilemma when Trojan brought the ad to them. Though the entire program lineup for Fox's newest channel, Fox Reality, is made possible thanks to the condom, Fox executives countered, "Contraceptive advertising must stress health-related uses rather than the prevention of pregnancy." Of course, for consistency (and to ensure many more hilarious spin-offs) Fox should really institute a no-condom policy on the sets of their shows Temptation Island, Temptation Island UK, Temptation Island AUS, My Bare Lady, Love Cruise, The Fifth Wheel, The Ultimate Love Test, Paradise Hotel, Blind Date.
Check out the ad and join Planned Parenthood in "thanking" the networks for maintaining consistency by standing up against such an extreme call to sexual responsibility.
